Study of anti-enterovirus 71 activities of Ge-Gen-Tang and its related ingredients

Abstract

The Ge-Gen Tang (GGT) was registered on “Sang- Han Lon”,
which consists of seven kinds of medicinal plants including ge-gen , ma-huang ,
guei-jhih , sheag-jiang , bai-shao , gan cao and da zao .
This Chinese medicinal formula was commonly used to treat infections
diseases including colds and influenza. The purpose of this research about into
the Ge-Gen Tang (GGT) and its related ingredients in inhibiting enterovirus 71 (EV71)
infection was investigated. The XTT reduction assay was used to treat the antiEV71
activity and the cytotoxicity of the tested drugs. The effective concentrations
of tested drugs to inhibit the infection of EV71 were not cytotoxic to the
target cells. The tested drugs were better than positive control (ribavirin) becomes
GGT and its ingredients exhibited the 50% cytotoxicity concentration (CC50)
more than 2000μg/ml , 50% inhibitive concentration (IC50) less than 5μg/ml
and selectivity index (SI) more than 900. The present study concludes that GGT
and its ingredients possess potent anti-EV71 activities. Additional studies are
in progress to elucidate the preventive or therapeutic effect by time course
study and to define the mechanism of anti-EV71 effect of tested drugs.
